    Bill Summary

This bill authorizes a chiropractic physician to enter into a direct primary care agreement with an individual patient or the patient's legal representative. Present law authorizes a medical, surgical, or osteopathic physician to enter into a direct primary care agreement with an individual patient or the patient's legal representative. This bill adds a "chiropractic physician" to those authorized to enter into a direct primary care agreement with an individual patient or the patient's legal representative. Present law defines a direct primary care agreement as a written contractual agreement between a "primary care physician" and an individual patient or the patient's legal representative. This bill specifies that the agreement must be between a "direct primary care physician" and an individual patient or the patient's legal representative. ON MARCH 13, 2017, THE SENATE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED SENATE BILL 224, AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT #1 specifies that screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for the purpose of promotion of health or the detection and management of disease or injury within the scope of practice of a chiropractic physician is primary care service that may be provided pursuant to a direct primary care agreement. ON APRIL 6, 2017, THE HOUSE SUBSTITUTED SENATE BILL 224 FOR HOUSE BILL 334, ADOPATED AMENDMENT #2, AND PASSED SENATE BILL 224, AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT #2 specifies that this bill does not authorize a chiropractic physician to use a title other than "chiropractor," "chiropractic physician," or "doctor of chiropractic."
