Students - As enacted, specifies that beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, a student in the third grade may not be promoted to the next grade level unless the student has shown a basic understanding of curriculum and ability to perform the skills required in the subject of reading as demonstrated by the student's grades or standardized test results; such student may be promoted if the student participates in an LEA approved research-based intervention prior to the beginning of the next school year; act does not apply to any student who has an IEP pursuant to the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. - Amends TCA Title 49.

    ON MAY 18, 2011, THE SENATE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED SENATE BILL 1776, AS AMENDED.

    AMENDMENT #1 rewrites the bill to specify that beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, a student in the third grade may not be promoted to the next grade level unless the student has shown a basic understanding of curriculum and ability to perform the skills required in the subject of reading as demonstrated by the student's grades or standardized test results. However, such student may be promoted if the student participates in an LEA approved research-based intervention prior to the beginning of the next school year. This amendment would not apply to any student who has an individualized education program (IEP) pursuant to the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
